My Speech Is Fine! What's A Medical Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)? | Day 1 March Med SLP Madness

Updated: Mar 4

During my time spent at McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital, I heard the phrase, "I speak fine; I don't need speech therapy" more times than I can count. I wished more people know what a medical SLP was, what we do, and where to find us. My wishing is over because you're going to find out who we are today!!

A Medical SLP is a speech-language pathologist who focuses on the medical aspects of our field such as feeding, swallowing, voice and upper airway disorders, and more.

Medical SLPs can be found in hospitals, sub-acute rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, in cars driving to homes for home health, outpatient clinics, and more!

We are often very passionate about our chosen niche. My personal niche is adult & senior swallowing and voice/upper airway disorders. Specifically, I work closely with my clients' teams to rule out specific diagnosis and provide individualized treatment sessions.

As a Medical SLP, I have expertise in the following areas:

  • Mobile Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)

  • Modified Barium Swallow Study Interpretation Skills

  • Upper Airway Evaluations

  • Acoustic Voice Recording and Analysis

  • Biofeedback for Swallowing Treatment

  • Tongue Strengthening via Special Device for Articulation and Swallowing

  • Specialized Dementia Considerations and Modifications

  • And More!

Other SLPs have their own specialty areas and we have social media networks in which we stay connected. You never know who may be able to help or knows someone with knowledge in that area.

If you or a loved one are experiencing speech, swallowing, or voice issues but aren't sure where to turn. Please reach out! We are happy to consult with you to send you in the right direction.

Thanks for reading & Happy Friday!!
